Working together for a better internet: celebrating Safer Internet Day 2022

At Trend Micro, we’ve been protecting our customers from cyber-threats for the past 30+ years. And we’ve become pretty good at it over that time. But making the digital world safer is not just a matter of researching new malware and building better ways to detect, respond to and block it. It’s also about teaching all members of society how to use technology in a more responsible, critical and respectful way.

That’s where our long-running Internet Safety for Kids and Families initiative comes in. We’ll be celebrating Safer Internet Day this February 8th in the hope that more young people join the conversation, and help us to build a better online world.

Safer Internet Day: working together for a better internet

Last week Facebook and Google hit the headlines yet again for the wrong reasons after they were found to have bypassed Apple’s strict approvals process to distribute data harvesting apps to users. In Facebook’s case, the firm paid users as young as 13 in return for downloading the market research app. Critics claim it was less than open about the privacy-invading purposes of the app, and that its parental consent ‘checks’ could be easily faked.

It has all served as a timely reminder of the privacy and security risks families are exposed to on a regular basis today, as we celebrate Safer Internet Day (SID) around the world tomorrow, on the 5th February. Continue reading

Making the Internet a Safer Place for Our Children

Did you know it’s Safer Internet Day today? The global awareness-raising event plays an important role in promoting mutual respect online and the responsible use of technology. The latest research released to coincide with the event highlights perfectly the light and shade of the internet world. Some 40% of 8-17-year-olds said they’ve felt worried or anxious online in the past week, but on the other hand, 83% said they’ve experienced kindness on the internet over the past year.
