An estimated 2.5 million staff and students work in the UK’s universities, with many more in further education. That’s a lot of potential targets for ransomware, phishing and other cyber-threats. That’s why we’re proud to be sponsoring this year’s UCISA19 Leadership Conference later this month.
UCISA is helping to transform the education sector through digital change. We believe effective cybersecurity must be an intrinsic part of this.
Unis under fire
Universities and colleges are an increasingly popular target for attackers. They have large numbers of mobile users and may lack the resources to properly secure networks. This exposes individuals to data loss and fraud, and the institutions themselves to ransomware and possible theft of highly sensitive research IP.
According to last year’s Jisc Cyber Security Posture Survey, the top three threats reported by HE and FE institutions were: phishing & social engineering; ransomware/malware; and lack of awareness/accidents. Patch management and BYOD also made it into the top 10 for HE while insufficient funding and lack of resources were listed for the first time by FE respondents.
All of which highlights the challenges facing IT and digital professionals in the sector. We’re glad to be highlighting these, and what can be done to mitigate risk going forward, at this year’s UCISA Leadership Conference. The event’s focus is recognition that cultural change is often key to the successful implementation of new technologies — and this is certainly true of cyber. Without security built into new initiatives “by design and default”, organisations will continue to be exposed to unnecessary risk and projects could be derailed.
Trend Micro has been helping schools, colleges and universities mitigate cyber risk for many years now. Our broad range of solutions cover every part of the IT infrastructure, from mobile endpoints to networks and hybrid cloud servers. To find out more, drop by the show or get in touch…
