Trend Micro Recognised Again as a Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms

by the Trend Micro Corporate Team

We started 2018 off with a bang. Trend Micro was named a Leader in Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms * and has been recognised as a Leader in this Magic Quadrant since 2002. This year, three vendors are recognised as Leaders out of a total of 21 vendors evaluated.

Since then, industry leaders like Trend Micro have consistently innovated and evolved to meet the ever changing and increasingly sophisticated threats thrown at us. We feel earning a position in the top right quadrant, and remaining there is an important distinction to us and, especially to our customers, because it recognises our strong and balanced success over the years both in innovation and market execution.

Since the early days of the Gartner Magic Quadrant for this category (first called Enterprise Antivirus), there have been multiple waves of new innovation. Back in 2002, integrated firewall captured the market’s and Gartner’s attention. Fast forward to more recent times and we see technologies such as full disk encryption, application control, and machine learning as exciting and efficient new ways to protect endpoints, detect threats and give customers piece of mind. That’s why we’ve always invested heavily in innovative, effective techniques to deliver the best-possible protection. For example, two years ago we introduced powerful machine learning threat detection, providing both pre-execution and run-time analysis, improving our interception of ransomware and the growing file-less malware threat. To date, we are one of the only EPP vendors to leverage machine learning at both these critical times.

This year, the industry and the team at Trend Micro believes that the next new wave of innovation belongs to Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR). At the end of the day, wading past all the ads, blogs and marketing noise, it’s important to remember that the main priority for any EPP solution is the effective detection of threats, minimising damage and all the while, reducing the IT resource impact – a mantra we at Trend hold dear. EDR addresses this pain, and provides two main capabilities – detection and automated response, and the deep-in-the-weeds investigation that sheds light on threat events. EDR’s vital detection and automated response capabilities are already core components of Trend Micro’s endpoint protection approach and is included in the core EPP offering used by our global customer base.

The benefit of EDR’s investigative abilities are of strong interest to many organisations, but are frequently out of reach due to the need for dedicated and highly trained teams, which most customers don’t have. Many EDR products are still too complex and unwieldy to use, and that’s a problem we vendors have to solve. Looking ahead, managed detection and response will be that next important innovation in 2018 and will help offload some of the EDR burden.

So what does being an Endpoint Protection Platforms Magic Quadrant Leader mean to our customers? We believe it means that by selecting a leader like Trend Micro, they are getting a vendor with a proven track record; one that is strongly focused on threat detection and always embraces new approaches and techniques. It means customers are selecting not just a vendor, but a strategic partner who is committed to being there for them over the long haul.

There is always noise in the market, and the last couple of years have been especially deafening, with new VC investments in the industry, and ransomware being driven by a viable business model. Customers face a huge challenge when trying to assess solutions, and are bombarded with unending jargon from dozens of vendors (21 were covered in this report alone). Thankfully, Gartner’s framework helps sort through some of this noise. What else can customers use to help frame their decisions? We have two words – effectiveness testing. While it’s great to talk about cutting edge innovations and new capabilities, at the end of the day, the million dollar question is, do they detect new threats? Literally millions could be at stake! We are strong supporters of not only the analyst evaluation reports, but also of independent third-party testing and we urge the vendor community and customers to continue investing in testing approaches that address the #1 customer pain – threat detection.

At Trend Micro, we believe in holistic threat protection, and that’s why we provide enterprises with effective threat protection techniques. Visit us here to download your copy of the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms.
